Zircon, cubic zirconia and diamond
“Zircon” in fashion jewellery usually refers to a stone used for its sparkle and colour. Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a different material, and neither is a diamond. The practical differences that matter on a shop shelf are hardness, weight and price — not the lab name.
- Hardness — softer than diamond; avoid abrasive cleaners and hard knocks.
- Weight — a well-set piece should not feel hollow.
- Colour — clear, green, black and mixed colours are the common fashion options.
- Price — the stone is a small part of the cost; setting labour and plating matter more.
Why the setting matters more than the stone
A glued stone falls out; a set stone stays. Look at the piece from the side: prongs or a bezel that hold the stone mechanically are what you want. On pavé, check that the stones sit level and that the metal between them is clean. This is the single best quality check on a zircon piece.
Reading the finish
“Gold tone” and “silver tone” describe the colour of the plating over a metal base. They are not solid gold or silver. Ask what the base metal is and how the piece is plated if you need to describe it accurately to customers. Plating wears first at the points of contact — inside rings, clasps and earring posts.
Care that actually helps
- Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
- Remove rings for swimming, cleaning and gym.
- Wipe with a dry soft cloth; avoid polishing compounds on plated surfaces.
- Store pieces separately to prevent rubbing.
- Check settings periodically and stop wearing a piece if a stone is loose.
Buying for a shop
Order a sample, wear it, photograph it, and compare the plating to what you already stock. Then base the bulk order on styles that fit a role on the shelf — entry, core, colour, hero — rather than on a single bestseller. Our boutique assortment guide covers that structure, and small minimums explains how a first order can be kept manageable.

Questions buyers ask
Is zircon the same as cubic zirconia?
No. They are different materials, though both are used as diamond alternatives in fashion jewellery. Ask us which stone a specific style uses.
Will the stones fall out?
Set stones are mechanically held and are far more secure than glued stones. Check the setting from the side and inspect periodically.
Can I wear it every day?
Yes, with care. Remove rings for swimming, cleaning and gym, and keep perfume off the piece. Plating wears fastest where it rubs.
